Questions the teardowns answer

Short, anonymized questions practitioners ask about messy event names, renames, and required fields. Each answer points at a Taxon worked example — sample files, not client exports. Files stay in the tab.

  • Basic pass

What does a basic Taxon pass look like on a messy export?

Answer: cluster near-duplicate event names → Accept or Keep separate → export a pack → open the next dump against that pack → optionally clean Values.

The primary teardown walks a sample Amplitude export (52 name strings → 15 clusters): one Accept, one Keep separate, the pack (taxon-pack.md / .json / taxon-map.json), next-dump drift, and a Values pass. Same flow works on Mixpanel, Heap, PostHog, GA4, Segment, and warehouse CSVs.

  • Rename · effective date

How do you rename an event without rewriting history?

Answer: write every rename as old → canonical, effective from a date; keep the old name as an alias so history still resolves; diff the next export against that map.

Taxon holds the aliases in the pack and taxon-map.json. Put the effective date in the pack note (2.2 has no date field). Next dump shows drifted vs new. Taxon doesn’t push renames into the vendor UI or rewrite your warehouse — it gives you the map, the dated note, and the diff.

  • Required fields · quarantine

How do you require fields without breaking replays?

Answer: require a small set of fields at the edge, quarantine failures instead of dropping them, and version those rules with the schema so a replay runs the same checks. Diff property values between dumps so drift shows up before it hits a chart.

Taxon’s part is the decided name list, Properties key clustering, the Values eligible/skipped rail, values drift vs last pack, and taxon-values.csv / dbt case export. It doesn’t run live ingest gates or quarantine anything — enforcing the contract is your collector, warehouse, or dbt model.
